How often should I cut my hair?

Updated: Nov 5, 2020

Hair grows about half an inch a month so depending on what hairstyle you have and what your end goal is this will have an effect on how often you need to cut your hair.

The key factors are: Can you no longer achieve your style? Are the ends of your hair visibly dry or damaged?

When you trim the ends of your hair you are essentially getting rid of some of the damage that your hair can experience through day to day activities, for example, chemical services and heat styling. You are taking away parts of the hair that are doing more damage than good.

Shorter styles will need cutting every 3-6 weeks. If you have a very specific style, for example a pixie cut or a precise bob then you will need very regular trims to keep the style sharp and polished.

For mid-length to long hair that isn't damaged and you want to maintain the length it is at, then less regular trims are needed. We would advise every 8-10 weeks to trim off the grown out ends and refresh the layers. If you are trying to grow your hair and it isn't damaged then we can see you every 12 weeks.

Long hair is very old. Even if it is not damaged, it will look dry and be very fragile. Long hair is typically more susceptible to breakage, split ends and appearing thinner. If you have chemical treatments and your hair is fine it will be fragile. We recommend you visit the salon every 8 weeks.

For very compromised hair - hair that is extremely damaged, broken and has split ends then regular trims are a must. The only way split ends will go is if they are cut out. If you don't cut them they will keep breaking and split up the hair shaft and the condition of your hair will not improve. You should come in every 6 weeks.

The benefits of trimming your hair are immense:

* you are taking away the parts of your hair doing more damage than good

* you are giving way to the ability for healthy hair to begin to grow

* it promotes healthy hair and will stop your hair looking fried and frazzled

* it gets rid of split ends

* no more heat damage

* your hair will be easier to style

* it makes your hair look thicker

* it prevents knots

* it reduces frizz

* your hair is easier to detangle

* your hair will look good and it keeps your colour looking fresh
